Ripley Morris Men

Derbyshire, England

Ashover Ring Meeting 2003
Summer Programme 2003

Ripley Morris Men were formed in 1924. The side flourished until the early 1950's and was then re-formed in 1981. In July 1991, to celebrate the 10th Anniversary, Morris Men came from all over the country to dance in the Derbyshire Peak District, passing through the streets of Ripley for a massed display on Ripley Market Place.

Morris Dancing is an ancient pagan ritual. The bells and handkerchiefs frighten away evil spirits ensuring that crops grow and children are plentiful. The dancers are assisted by the Fool, Molly, and Horace the Unicorn, who is depicted on the Ripley Coat of Arms.

On the right, dancing outside our local pub the "Red Lion" in Fritchley.

On the left, a newspaper story in the Nottingham Evening Post, about our revival of the Heage Nose Club - a society for those with probosces longer than 2 1/2 inches from bridge to tip.

Above was taken from our cultural exchange to Lubersac in the Limousin, France last summer. Fortunately, many French people already viewed Les Anglais as fools.

Can you help?
Gilbert, our former squire, is compiling the definitive version of "Dog named Rover". He has collected about 150 verses so far, but needs another hundred or so to fill the new Ripley Morris Double CD. All submissions gratefully received by "Rover"
